2009 May | FIFOTO Blog

Think “Blue skies fluffy clouds…Blue skies fluffy clouds…Blue skies fluffy clouds…” Weather forecasts for this weekend is torrential rain but I stayed positive even when I woke up to find a slight drizzle and grey clouds hovering over SOHO. It poured as we were about to leave the apartment so we decided to have breakfast instead!

Unfortunately, FIFOTO bomoh doesn’t seem to work in Hong Kong… we decided to just go ahead with the shoot anyway! This is my first time shooting in the rain but I’m so excited about how it turned out, here’s a preview!!!

Many thanks to John & Ai Wee for being such great sports, posing in the rain!

Sook Ping & Ernest

20.05.2009

Time flies. My goal for the week here in HK was to complete my literature review part of my paper. It’s Wenesday and I’m only on the first paragraph on my dissertation. I’m experiencing a mental block but I’m determined to finish as much as I can before the weekend! And it’s going to be a busy weekend for me… with 2 portrait shoots on Sat and another on Sun, I’m stoked to be shooting in this new environment!

The first time I met Sook Ping was at the P&G award ceremony for the “Freedom to Be Award” back in 2006. And on this rare occassion, I was not photographing the event but was one of three girls who received the award! The “Freedom to Be Award” was presented to three Malaysian women who pursued their passions in their professional life. I was asked to do a TV ad for them after that and oh my!!! I definitely ain’t good in front of the camera! After the shoot, I had to record the Bahasa Malaysia version which was later dubbed over and I’m definitely not proud of my spoken Malay!

It was an early start and I reached Sook Ping’s place by 6am! Sook Ping’s hairstyle and makeup made her look real Japanese which was the look she was going for and it all worked out! Her beautifully custom-made cheongsam worked well with the “Oriental” theme she had for the tea ceremony!

Today, she gets married to Ernest who she’s dated for the past 11 years and this girl was happy and excited that the wait finally came to an end and she anxiously waited by her window for his grand arrival!

Needless to say, they had the police escort the entourage of boys who arrived with a BIG BANG with Chinese drums! And the best part of all is the fun the boys always have with the games as you will see in the photos to follow!

Looks like the boys are enjoying themselves more than the girls enjoy watching!

Some moneky business going on behind the bushes…

I love this action shot!

Lucky this washes out!

Literally “Throwing money around…”

A church service followed Sook Ping’s tea ceremony. The church was prettied up with yellow flower pews that lined the isle.

The dinner reception was held at the Sheraton, Subang and it was a huge party! When we say huge… we mean.. over 90 tables! But there were great vibes that night… People were friendly and approachable (by “approachable, I mean… happy to take group table photos) and it was a breeze covering the table shots!

It was Sook Ping’s idea to have the morning session photos printed for the night. It was a mad rush for me but it turned out great!

“Can’t take my eyes off you” was the song that played as the parents of the bride and groom and the bridal party made their grand walk-in but the bride and groom did not follow! Where were they?

They were up on stage – Ernest on the bongos and Sook Ping on the piano! They played different versions of the song that included jazz and bossa nova! I love weddings with a twist!!!

At the after party…everyone got down and grooved at the after party too which took off as the band, the groom and Justin Lim, our very own favorite local artist/musician jammed on the bongos!

Congrats to Sook Ping & Ernest! Thanks for having us be part of your special day!

It’s a SUNDAY in HK for me! Today is “Surprise day” by Allen… he has planned a day out for me and I’m clueless as to what! Am excited! (It’s been a long time since he surprised me so I’m totally looking forward to it! Well he did surprise me with a flowers on Mother’s day last weekend (no, I’m not preggars!)…. the card read “From Bam-Bam & Allen”.

The good thing about being at Plaza 138 is that you can just walk down, shoot an event at Hotel Maya and walk back up! Beaubelle’s launch of their new SWISS ORGANIQUE line was held at the Sky Lounge. Can you believe it? We’ve been in the same building for the past 3 years and I’ve never been in there before? There’s always a first!

It was a casual luncheon for the media to introduce their new organic range and share experiences on skincare. The place was beautifully decorated with flowers by Arada Designs who resides in Hotel Maya as well!

The food presentation was exquisite!

A Tribute to Mom

Look on Mom’s face when I surprised her last Friday in Penang – PRICELESS!

Yes…. I had planned it with my cousin and Aunt Jen to surprise my mom for Mother’s Day. And it was a real surprise indeed! Last Friday, Aunt Jen, Mei Ling and myself turned up at the hospital where she had finished her physiotherapy session and as my mom walked out to the car, probably frustrated that Aunt Jen was 15 mins late, smiled in disbelief when she saw me in the passenger seat! What’s more.. 5 minutes before, she had just called and talked to me over the phone!

It was good to be back – we did the usual – eat, sleep, eat, sleep, tried to work on my paper (very little got done)… I ate Sister’s CKT three days in a row, followed by really expensive but quality durians, also three days in a row. On Mother’s day, I had 3 meals consecutively, one after another! Yes, that is the Penang routine – bad for any diets!

After Mother’s Day dinner, we went through all our old photo albums because we’re collecting photos for my dad’s upcoming 80th birthday bash. It was a good way to end a wonderful weekend, going through all the years of growing up and travels! It wasn’t until much later when we got to an entire stack of albums of my mom’s scrapbook of collected newpaper and magazine articles of her, back in the day!

I’ve always known that she’s appeared in a few newspaper articles during her time as an air stewardess but I was taken aback to find a stack of albums filled with newspaper clippings featuring her! My Mom! Dolly Tan! SHE WAS FAMOUS!!!!! I was in shock.. in awe…and impressed…

My mom’s career as an air stewardess began with MSA (Malaysia Singapore Airlines). 1 year later, the company split and she became part of Singapore Airlines for the next 4 years. Later on, she joined Cathay Pacific for 3 years before she decided to give up her career for motherhood!

My mom was one of the very first few crew on the inaugural flights to the US, London, Australia and within Asia. She shot to fame because she speaks and carries herself well and of course, with her good looks, why wouldn’t they want her representing the airline!

In this article below, my mom (far left) was interviewed on her monthly spending habits on clothes, shoes, bags and cosmetics…

These were the old MSA uniforms

Mom was featured in MSA’s ad campaigns, fashioning their new uniforms designed by French couturier, Pierre Balmain. This was their ground uniform which they had to change into before landing (what a hassle!).

This was their in-flight uniform

Mom also appeared on the front cover of “Her World” magazine! (The one in red & white swimsuit)

Mom’s in the far left in a black swimsuit, and 2nd from the right.

Even her dimples made a name for themselves! (She has a cleft on her chin!)

This ad appeared in the newspapers and in the cinema featuring the special meals they serve on board, including milk for babies!

She blew her chances in this contest because her Malay was errr… lousy…

And then… I found proof sheets of one of her modeling shoots! (She can’t remember what it was for!)

Love this shot!

On another note, I recently posted a photo of an Afghan Hound I met at the SPCA Animal Party at Palate Palette. My excitement of seeing one in real life was due to the fact that my mom used to have 2 of them and I had only seen them in photos!

From left: Alfie, and Desi, a silky terrier, both imported from Melbourne. Far right: Joey, who my mom bought from Harrods, London.

Handled by a little girl, Kylie, Joey won first prize in a dog show

And of course, because it’s Mother’s Day… here’s a photo of mom & I!

To my dearest Mom, Thanks for being the coolest mom ever! I love you!
