Wedding Photography | FIFOTO Blog - Part 2

Jessica & Gav

2.12.2011

Filled with joy & excitement to be back at Pangkor Laut Resort for the 4th time round, I was equally nervous. Not because the wedding was on an island, not because it was the smallest wedding I’ve ever shot, but because this time, in my 6 years of shooting weddings, I was going to shoot it alone. Being the paranoid and kiasu (there, I admit it!) freak I am, the thoughts just kept playing in my head… what if I miss the shot? what if I miss the exchange of rings? What if my shots are blur or out of focus? There’s no Steve or David or Jason or Nic to back me up, or hold the flash up, or lift the veil! Oh no! Despite all that drama that was going through my head, it went well. Perfect, in my opinion! Jessica and Gav’s wedding is by far the most intimate wedding I’ve been a part of. And by intimate, I mean 12 of them, bride and groom included!

The wedding ceremony and exchange of vows were held at the beautiful sandy beach of Emerald Bay. It was a short and sweet ceremony followed by a portrait shoot of the cute couple at sunset. Luck would have it, there was Ben, an intern at PLR who was eager to help! And so, I had found my assistant! The highlight of the night for me was the Chinese wishing lanterns. Everyone wrote a wish on a paper lantern, lit it and released it to the sky. It was a pretty sight indeed and definitely a photo opp!

Congrats to Jessica & Gav! Wishing you both all the love & laughter in the world! (with Gav’s sense of humor, we can be sure of it!)

Traveling to Penang has always been all about overindulging on great Penang Hawker Food and this time, it was no exception. With Amran & Tini’s wedding stretching (or rather compacted) over 3 days, this was going to be an overly indulgent trip for both Nic & I!

The beautiful akad nikah ceremony was held at Tini’s home. Despite a little drama that involved a  lot of blood and required a doctor’s attention (lucky for Tini almost all the major professions were represented in her dulang entourage), the bride looked gorgeous in a sophisticated baju Melayu and so did the color-coordinated dulang girls! Amran and his stunning dulang boys who arrived in style, all dressed in matching navy silk baju’s, got straight to business (with the Tok Kadi, of course)! The groom looked very nervous but when it was time for him to shine, he aced his Lafaz on the first try! And then it was official, Tini and Amran were husband and wife!

The next day was the Bersanding reception hosted by Tini’s parents. This was the first time I have seen the Main Ballroom at the E&O filled to the brim! There were tables  even on the 2nd floor and in places I didn’t even know existed! It was during one of the speeches when we found out about the story of how Amran, the Penang banker boy, who woo-ed Tini,  the Penang banker girl, with their first date at a Lok-Lok stand! Trust Penangites to pick food over ambiance!

The 3rd and final event of the Amran & Tini festivities takes the cake for the most interesting journey to a wedding venue EVER! We were treated to an interesting trip up Penang Hill, at the back of a 4WD pick up, migrant worker style! With the 90 degree turns but thankfully at the mercy of an experienced Penang Hill driver, there was no need to go looking for a roller coaster ride! But the journey was well worth it, because being at Amran’s home atop Penang Hill was like being in the English countryside, with a truly breathtaking view!

The dinner reception was an intimate one, held at David Brown’s where close friends and family had the chance to mingle, enjoy the cool weather, beautiful decor and best of all, the spectacular view of Penang! And with a certain ‘someone’ catching the bridal bouquet, we can only hope for another truly wonderful wedding to happen sometime in the very near future!

He came from Australia and she from Poland or was it Norway. But more importantly, they decided to have their wedding in Malaysia because it was halfway between their two respective countries. Don’t see that too often. They did choose a good spot though, Avilion. For a bunch of white folk from countries that experienced harsh winters, they did well to brave the Malaysian sun. I think there were actually a few guests that came in a 3 piece without even breaking a sweat. All in all it was a short and sweet ceremony on the beach before heading towards the intimate setting of six tables.

There were speeches, there was singing, there was laughter, there was singing, there was dancing… did I mention there was singing. It seemed a tradition to take certain well known songs and to completely change the lyrics. We were treated to at least 3! To round off the event I think the best moment to share with you would be the words spoken by one of the parents ( the Groom’s father I think). He hoped that no matter what trials lay ahead of them, that they would always remember where it was they had their wedding, thus reminding them to always strive to “meet in the middle”.

What happens on a wedding day is always interesting. What happens on a wedding day after all the morning formalities is over and done with, and a swimming pool on the premises, is very much more interesting and for that story, you’ll have to ask the bride and groom (as well as the heng tais). If you ask properly, i’m sure they’ll tell, or even show you the pictures!

Keith and Leeza, the FIFOTO couple who met in the online realm of Dragon Raja and made it more permanent by getting married, just proves that love does truly exist up there in the internet.
For the morning chip san leong, the heng tais had to bop for fruits in a big tub of ice water. I never realized that bopping your head in ice cold water was like extremely hard. And not only that, the ‘kind’ che mui’s had the groom peel the skin off the fruits and make out Leeza’s name, without using his hands!
The reception was held at the new Royale Chulan Hotel, in the middle of a spacious indoor garden with a glass ceiling. Keith & Leeza had a chocolate booth that night reception and boy, was it a hit that night! Loads and loads of yummy hershey chocolates and maybe some limited edition white chocolate kisses were abundant and it was like never ending! It was so yummy, that I saw some friends tapau-ing the kisses for remembrance (more like to satisfy their sweet tooths!)
Thanks for the chocolates that night (I made a beeline to the choco booth more than once that night) and here’s to many more fist pumps in the future! You gotta teach your future kids to do the fist pump too, it’ll be super cute! Or who knows? Maybe they might come outta the womb with a fist pump! YES-la!
