Jonker Street, Melaka |
27.10.2008 |
Finally, I had a chance to walk along the night market at Jonker Street on the weekend of Jody & Kelly’s wedding. I’ve been to Melaka many times before but have never had the chance to check out the lively night market on the weekends.
Everyone was very relaxed and the mood was pretty calming – everyone were friendly and strolled along the night market without a care in the world – completely different from the fast-paced lifestyle I’m used to! There were all kinds of stalls selling food, trinkets, local handicrafts, art and toys. A lot of the food reminded me of Penang. I found “Goreng Cempedak“, a deep fried-tempura style local fruit that I was craving for only a week ago. There was my favorite “Wan Chang Kuih” (think and crispy pancake-like snack with peanut filling) which wasn’t as good as they ones you find in Penang.
At the end of Jonker Street was a stage where the older crowd whiled their weekend away by singing Karaoke. There was a huge audience as well! I was thirlled to see some old folks dance wildy to the tunes! It was pretty hilarious and definitely something out of this world! (well, out of my world!) Refreshing!
Here are some of my favorite photos of the night!

This is for Allen…just kidding babe! =P

This is “Wan Chang Kuih”

This is fried cempedak – super yummy!!!

Check out the toys!!!

Aside from Karaoke, another favorite pastime is line-dancing. We must have passed at least three event halls having these dancing sessions!

Here’s a pretty cool invention – a mini sewing machine that helps you stitch!

The open-air karaoke…

I wasn’t kidding when I said there were some wild crazy dancing going on!

We finally found a place to eat at about 10:30pm! This was dinner, in addition to my goreng cempedak and Steve’s Curry laksa!
